"Quote" —Tachika

A tachika is small and weak, standing at two thirds the height of a human or less. They evolved from a predator/scavenger species on a world just outside of its Goldilocks zone, surviving conditions that would have made life difficult - if not impossible - for most other races. Looking something like a cross between a soft, fluffy kitten and a quadrupedal monkey, they are an intelligent species, very charismatic, and quite capable with weaponry. While their ability to pilot is minimal, and their stature makes infantry combat difficult (and outright dangerous), their ability to avoid combat altogether is essentially unmatched. Nevertheless, they are still quite capable with weaponry - particularly plasma- and laser-based - and can use their feet as hands if necessary - from which springs the term "a tachikan volley", referencing the wild, blind fire from an army of tachikas, each armed with four plasma pistols. Unfortunately, their thick fur is quite flammable, which keeps them out of combat all the same, if they can help it.

Tachikas gained great popularity as a galactic debutant, owed entirely to their charisma and appearance, being near-universally considered adorable. Unfortunately, this popularity quickly waned as they began to spread across the galaxy like rabbits, accelerated by the fact that a tachika's skillset makes thievery child's play. Their troubles didn't end there; humans found them just as adorable as the other races had, and enslaved many millions in despicable conditions. Even centuries after the Galactic Cleansing and the subsequent banning of slavery, it is estimated there are millions of tachikas still in captivity.

Lifespan and reproduction

Tachika, despite looking like adorable monkey-kittens, are a very sex-focused species. They are sexually fertile for over 75% of their lives, starting when they're 10 years old and extending until the day they die. Although they don't live long - average life expectancy is 42 years (no change since pre-Cleansing) - they make the most of what they have. This generally means days and days on end of going at it like rabbits - once every 3-4 years (though fortunately they're capable of restraining themselves). During their lengthy evolution, the females became significantly harder to impregnate - possibly as a defense mechanism of a sort, similar to a duck. When the female finally gets pregnant, she carries the child and has it live, with no eggs involved. Then, when the kid is around ten years old, she basically tells it to do whatever the hell it wants and gets on with her life - after all, the father is nowhere to be seen either, and likely hasn't been for close to a decade.

After tachika children are mobile, parenting isn't really a thing. Tachika children learn from older members of society, "older" here being a subjective term that means "over the age of 30". They have very little concept of loyalty, even to relatives or sexual partners, and given that they practically raise themselves on the streets, it's hardly any surprise that tachika have a reputation for poor behavior (particularly theft).

It's interesting to note that despite how much tachika love to have sex, they actually have one of the lowest fertility rates in the galaxy - the average tachika only has 3.6 children. This doesn't stop them from reproducing like rabbits anyway, however - their populations can grow like nobody's business if they have a mind to it.

Abilities

Tachikan characters have the following characteristics:

  • +1 speed
  • +1 charisma
  • +1 conventional
  • Excellent sprinter: Their body is built completely for speed and ease of movement. They cannot fail running rolls as a result, and succeed without question.
  • Inexplicably cute: A tachikan is one of a very few species to be almost universally recognized as "cute". Soft-hearted individuals take an immediate liking to them, granting a +1 bonus with charisma rolls
  • Nimble: Tachikans are quite agile and flexible. They have advantage on all agility-only rolls on foot.
  • Hand feet: Being somewhat monkey-like, a tachika can use its feet as hands, and can hang by its tail for a short period of time. In some instances this has been used to let them quad-wield pistols - although not without significant accuracy penalties.
  • -1 strength
  • -1 exotics
  • -1 auxiliary
  • Very short: The Tachika stand at only just over half the height of a human. They can't reach things very far above their heads, and can't climb over objects they can't reach the top of. Countertops, for instance, can pose a significant obstacle. Full cover still counts as full cover, but half cover can count as full cover as well.
  • Lightweight: The Tachika are as lightweight as they are short. All horizontal non-cutting melee blows that make solid contact knock them off their feet and stun them for three layers.
  • Fire weakness: Due to the fact that their thick fur is flammable and can melt, fire is very dangerous to a tachikan. The amount of damage that would normally severely injure a human will kill a tachikan, and an amount that would hardly faze a human will cause great injury. They are also prone to catching fire, and roll 1d6-1 whenever they're hit with laser or plasma fire to determine whether this happens.
  • Heat-averse: Warm temperatures - above roughly 32 C (90 F) - will cause a tachikan to slow greatly while they try to lose excess body heat, to keep from overheating. All actions will take twice as many layers to perform.
  • Colorblind: Tachikans can't see color. They see the world in what is essentially sepia tones.
  • Picky eaters: Tachikans aren't able to eat food of any other species, with some very rare exceptions. They must eat food specifically designed for them or they wind up with severe stomach problems - at best.
